Pronounced wei. The name of a river, located in the county of Hedong in the middle of the river. Book of Documents (Shangshu), Canon of Yao: He sent down his two daughters to the bend of the Gui River. Also a surname. Comprehensive Examination of Clans and Lineages (Shizu Bokao) states it is the surname Gui. Zuo Commentary (Zuo Zhuan), Eighth Year of Duke Yin: The Duke of Zheng, Hu, went to meet his bride, a woman of the Gui clan. Also, there was the Han Dynasty Secretariat Officer Gui Hao, and the Three Kingdoms period Wu official Gui Lan. Also the name of a prefecture. During the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, Northern Yan Prefecture was renamed Gui Prefecture.
Also pronounced gui. Dialect (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong: Gui ting means lazy. Commentary: Lan man means deceitful and cunning. The character man is originally written with the component for square at the lower right, and is also written as a variant form.
