Book of Former Han: Treatise on Rites and Music (Qianhan Shu: Liyue Zhi) says: Rub and wipe the auspicious altar, which is fragrant with pepper and orchids. Commentary states: To rub and wipe the altar. Zuo Si: Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu) says: To scratch and rub, creating wounds and welts.
