According to the Jiyun (Jiyun), the pronunciation is also fu. In the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen Jiezi), it is originally written as the character for a knee cover (fu), which is a type of ceremonial apron. The seal script form combines the radical for leather with the character for dragging (ba). The commentary by Xu Xuan states: It is currently written in the common variant form (fu), which is incorrect. In the Book of Rites (Liji), it is written: For those of the first rank of nobility, the apron is of blended colors with a dark ribbon; for those of the second rank, the apron is red with a dark ribbon; for those of the third rank, the apron is red with a leek-green ribbon. The commentary states: This refers to the apron worn with the ceremonial crown; it is a sacrificial garment, merely referred to by a different name. The word fu carries the meaning of to cover. In the History of the Former Han Dynasty (Qian Hanshu), it is written: Presented the imperial seal and ribbon. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: This refers to the cord of the imperial seal. Furthermore, according to the Jiyun (Jiyun), the pronunciation is fei. It refers to a knee cover. The character for knee cover (fu) acts as a cloth for concealing shame.
