Yangzi's Dialect (Fangyan) refers to a fu as a small raft. The commentary notes that a small raft is called a fu.
It is also used interchangeably with fu (a raft). The Analects (Lunyu) mentions, riding a raft to float upon the sea.
Furthermore, Guang Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) provide the pronunciation fu. The meaning is the same. Another interpretation refers to foam floating and accumulating on the surface of the water.
