Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states it means the spare horse for an imperial carriage. Another definition is close. Another definition is rapid. Also, Fuma Duwei (an official title). Established by Emperor Wu of Han to oversee the spare horses; during the Wei and Jin dynasties, those who married princesses were titled Fuma.
Zhao Kui’s Miscellaneous Records of the Military Camp (Xingying Zalu) states that the emperor’s daughter is titled princess, and her husband must be appointed Fuma Duwei, hence he is called Fuma. When female members of the imperial clan are titled county princesses, their husbands are called county husbands, and for district princesses, they are called district husbands; it is unknown what this signifies.
Six Categories of Written Language (Liushu Gu) records the form as a variant, while the common form is considered incorrect.
