According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a type of cooking vessel.
The Jade Chapters (Yupian) notes it is sometimes written in a variant form (fu).
The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Earth Official, Granary Official states: For all commoners receiving grain, four fu per person is the superior standard, three fu per person is the middle standard, and two fu per person is the inferior standard.
Commentary: Six dou and four sheng is called one fu.
Also, the Erya, Explaining Waters states: The inverted fu is one of the nine rivers.
Commentary: A place within the water where one can reside, shaped like an overturned cauldron.
Also, according to the Collected Rimes (Jiyun), pronounced li. Identical to the character for cauldron (li).
