Shuowen Jiezi explains it as: using arranged wood to cross a river. Another interpretation refers to a small wooden raft. Er-ya (Erya), Explanation of Words (Shiyan), states that a boat (fang) is what is meant by fu. Additionally, the Explanation of Water (Shishui) section records that the common people travel by fu. Yangzi's Dialect (Fangyan) refers to a fu as a small raft. The commentary notes that a small raft is called a fu. It is also used interchangeably with fu (a raft).
