According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the act of stumbling or being frustrated. In the Sea Rhapsody (Haifu) by Mu Hua, it is written: or one might stumble in the depths of the waves. The commentary notes that stumbling refers to the appearance of losing one's position or influence. Also pronounced deng. According to the Extensive Refined Words (Boya), it means to tread.
