Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collection Rhyme (Jiyun), and Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui): Pronounced ci (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): The awns of a tree. Xu Kai stated: The thorns of trees and plants. The two characters ce and ci are identical in sound and meaning. Note: In the Shuowen Jiezi, the character ci (thorn) forms its own radical; the characters for jujube and bramble are derived from it, but they have been incorrectly placed here.
