According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the placenta of a fetus.
According to the Extensive Records (Boya), when a person is four months pregnant, the placenta is formed.
From the Zhuangzi (Zhuangzi), Outer Things Chapter: Within the placenta there is a void, and the spirit has a natural space to roam. Commentary: Pao refers to the fetus within the womb. Lang refers to a void.
From the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Biography of the Outsider Relatives: Carefully store the placenta of my child. Commentary by Shigu: Pronounced bao. It refers to the protective covering of the fetus.
