According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced bo. In the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen), it is described as a yellow wood. In the Materia Medica (Bencao), it is noted that the character is sometimes written in the variant form nie. In the Rhapsody on the Sir of Nothingness (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned as bo lizhu yang. Zhang Yi states that the bark of this tree can be used for dyeing. It is also known as small bo. In the Materia Medica (Bencao), Tao Hongjing states that the zi bo tree is small, resembles a pomegranate tree, and has bark that is yellow and bitter. Furthermore, according to the Categorized Compilation (Leipian), it is pronounced pi, meaning a tray. It is derived from the character for bo. The form nie is incorrect.
