Book of Documents (Shangshu), chapter Great Plan (Hongfan), states: Do not grant the nine categories of the Great Plan. The commentary explains: Bi means to give.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei (Weifeng), writes: That lovely young woman, what shall I give her? The commentary explains: Bi means to give.
It is also used as a personal name. The younger sister of King Zhao of Chu, named Ji Qian, had the courtesy name Biwo. Recorded in Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Year 4 of Duke Ding.
Orthographic Rhymes (Zhengyun) points out: This character is composed of Field and Offering Table (qi), though some erroneously write it with the radical for Two Hands (gǒng).
