Pronounced pi. Name of a river. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), the river originates in the Cuishan mountain of Yiyang, Runan, and flows east into the Huai river. Also written as the variant form (pi). According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing), the Huai river is joined by the Pi river flowing from the south and north.
According to the Yupian, it also denotes the sound of water.
According to the Jiyun, pronounced pi. The meaning is the same.
According to the Guangya, pi pi describes luxuriant growth and abundance. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: Reeds and rushes are lush.
Also describes the movement of a boat. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: The boat moves along the Jing river.
Pronounced pei. Describes movement. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: The banners wave. The commentary notes it is also pronounced pi and fei.
