Ancient form. Pronounced bi (falling tone). Meaning: complete.
Book of Rites (Zhouli), Spring Offices (Chunguan), Music Master (Yueshi): Whenever a musical performance is concluded, it is announced that preparations are complete.
It also means complete or well-matched. Book of Documents (Shangshu), Zhou Offices (Zhouguan): Official positions need not all be filled, but rather filled by those who are suitable.
It also refers to things prepared in advance for use. Book of Documents (Shangshu), Charge to Yue (Shuoming): Only when every matter is prepared can one be without worry.
Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), Year 5 of Duke Xi: During the equinoxes and solstices, as well as the beginnings of the four seasons, one must record the clouds and celestial phenomena; this is done as a matter of precaution.
It also means sufficient. Book of Changes (Yijing), Appended Judgments (Xici): The Book of Changes is vast and grand, and is entirely complete.

It also refers to long-handled weapons. Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), Year 21 of Duke Zhao: If one's military forces are few, it is better to fight to the death; if one's forces are not sufficient for a fight to the death, it is better to discard one's long-handled weapons.
It also refers to scratching. Book of Rites (Liji), Autumn Offices (Qiuguan): The Mingshi, upon capturing wild beasts, shall present their hides, teeth, whiskers, and claws. Note: Whiskers refers specifically to the hair on the chin, and claws refers to the feet. Scratching is pronounced as claw.
