Guangyun and Jiyun: A fan-qie compound of pú and mèi, pronounced similarly to pèi. The meaning is to abandon or cast aside. Record of Rites (Liji): If benefits and official salaries are granted to the deceased before the living, then the common people will not turn their backs on their obligations. Also from the Record of Rites: Do not stand with your back turned. Commentary: Standing with the back turned means not facing the front directly. Also from the Xunzi (Xunzi): To be disobedient to a person's face and then deceive them behind their back. Sometimes also written in a variant form pronounced bèi.
