Pronounced ze. According to the Expanded Dictionary of Sounds (Guangyun), the Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui), and the Corrected Rhymes (Zhengyun), the sound is ze. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the sound is ce, pronounced ze. According to the Explanation of Scripts (Shuowen), it refers to a bed slat. According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), in the section on implements, a bed slat is called a zi. The commentary notes it is a bed board. According to the Book of Rites (Liji), in the chapter on the conduct of funerals (Tangong), it asks if the ornate and polished bed slats belonged to a grand officer.
It also means to accumulate or gather. According to the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the Odes of Wei, it speaks of green bamboo like an accumulation. The commentary says the term means accumulation, implying that the lush growth resembles things piled up.
It also refers to a reed mat. According to the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), in the Biography of Fan Sui, it says he was rolled in a reed mat and placed in a latrine. The investigative commentary notes that the term refers to a thin mat made of reeds or rushes.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Sea of Texts (Pianhai), it is also pronounced zhai. It refers to a tool for pressing wine. It is the same as the character for a wine press.
