Ancient text. Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Pronounced ze.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Appended Remarks (Xici): The sage uses this to perceive the deep, hidden mysteries of the world.
Commentary (Shu): Refers to that which is obscure, deep, and difficult to perceive.
Explanation of Text (Shiwen): Ze, the Jing family version, is written as ze. According to Xu Xuan in his commentary on the preface to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it discusses common errors in popular books that do not conform to the principles of the six categories of characters. He considers ze to be a borrowed character and suggests it should generally be used interchangeably with ze.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Ze is sometimes written in a variant form.
