According to the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen), it refers to long-lasting rain or overflowing water. Another source states it is the name of a river; originally written as zi. In the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijingzhu), it states the Zi River rises in the territory of Wuyang County, Wuling Commandery.
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced ci. The name of a river located in Changshan Commandery.
Textual verification: In the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen), the text refers to long-lasting rain or overflowing water. Another source states it is a river name located in Shaoling. Originally written as zi. We note that the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters does not contain the three characters for in Shaoling, so we have omitted them according to the original text.
