Commentary: The leaves of zhi resemble the Chinese lantern plant, the flowers are small and white, and the center of the flower is yellow. Yan Family Instructions (Yanshi Jiaxun): In the Jiangnan region, there is a type of bitter vegetable whose leaves resemble the Chinese lantern plant. Its flowers are sometimes purple and sometimes white, and its fruits are the size of pearls, being either purple or black. This is what the Erya refers to as zhi or huangchu. Nowadays, in the Hebei region, it is mistakenly called longkui (nightshade). Also, according to the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao): Li Shizhen states that baijiangcao (patrinia) is also known as kuzhi. Also written in a variant form.
