Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) state the pronunciation is zhi (level tone). Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) states it is pronounced zhi (rising tone).
Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): A round vessel. Also called dan, it is used to regulate food and drink. The character shape resembles a person with the character for seal or joint (jie) underneath it.
Jade Chapters (Yupian): Zhi is a type of wine vessel. Its capacity is four liters.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji): Biographies of Gaozu: Holding a jade zhi, he rose to toast the Retired Emperor.
It is also the name of a dye plant.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji): Biographies of the Economic Life: Ba and Shu are also fertile plains, abounding in zhi.
Commentary: Zhi is yanzhi (rouge), purple-red in color.
