In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Small Odes (Xiaoya), it is written: Those who strike the zheng beat the drums. Pu Dounan stated: The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) records that the drum official uses metal zhuo to regulate drum sounds and metal nao to halt the sound of drums; the name zheng does not appear. The zhuo and the nao are commonly referred to as zheng. Su Shi wrote in a poem: The rising sun at the treetops resembles a suspended bronze zheng. Furthermore, in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Winter Bureau, Record of Trades (Kaogongji), it is noted: The Fu clan manufactures bells; the upper part of the bell is called the zheng.
