Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Name of a beast. It resembles a leopard, has one horn and five tails. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On Mount Zhange there is a beast; its shape is like a red leopard, with five tails and one horn, its sound is like striking stone, and it is named zheng. Annotation: One source says it resembles a fox with wings. The Yellow Family's Sequel to the Lament for the South (Xusaojing) says: The owl gave its wings to the ningzheng.
Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced ding. Zheng-ning refers to the hair of a dog.
