According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), the pronunciation is zhan. It means to speak excessively. It also refers to being ill. In the Preface and Examples of the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), it describes a heart condition characterized by delirious speech and agitation. It also appears in personal names; Ruzhan is recorded in the Genealogy of the Imperial Clan in the History of the Song (Songshi).
