Commentary: It resembles a toad and lives on land. In the Huainan region, it is called the mosquito remover. Guangyun (Guangyun): Zhang Heng's Spiritual Constitution (Lingxian) states: Yi requested the elixir of immortality from the Queen Mother of the West; Heng'e stole it and fled to the moon palace, taking form within the moon, which is the chanzhu. The Master Who Embraces Simplicity (Baopuzi) states: A chanzhu that is three thousand years old has horns on its head and red vermilion markings like eight characters beneath its chin. Record of the Center (Zhongji): Those chanzhu that grow horns on their heads, if consumed, grant a life span of one thousand years. Wings of the Erya (Eryayi): The toad, known today as the kebi (a toad variety), has a bumpy back and favors the shade of walls and wallsides. Moon-chan refers to the light of the moon. Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun): The chan in chanzhu and the chan in moon-chan are the same; that one object possesses two pronunciations is due to differences in regional dialects.
