Shen Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Insect (chóng). Character:蟾. Kangxi strokes: 19. Page 1099, Entry 07. Pronounced zhan. Erya (Erya): "The frog is the chanzhu (a type of toad)." Commentary: It resembles a toad and lives on land. In the Huainan region, it is called the mosquito remover. Guangyun (Guangyun): Zhang Heng's Spiritual Constitution (Lingxian) states: Yi requested the elixir of immortality from the Queen Mother of the West; Heng'e stole it and fled to the moon palace, taking form within the moon, which is the chanzhu. The Master Who Embraces Simplicity (Baopuzi) states: A chanzhu that is three thousand years old has horns on its head and red vermilion markings like eight characters beneath its chin. Record of the Center (Zhongji): Those chanzhu that grow horns on their heads, if consumed, grant a life span of one thousand years. Wings of the Erya (Eryayi): The toad, known today as the kebi (a toad variety), has a bumpy back and favors the shade of walls and wallsides. Collecting them on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month is said to repel weapons. Further details are in the commentary under the character for toad (chú). Also pronounced chen. Moon-chan refers to the light of the moon. Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun): The chan in chanzhu and the chan in moon-chan are the same; that one object possesses two pronunciations is due to differences in regional dialects. Textual research: Erya, Explanation of Insects: The frog is the chanzhu. Commentary: It resembles a toad and lives on land. Huainanzi calls it the mosquito remover. (Amended according to the original text of the Explanation of Fish, correcting frog to toad, and removing the word zi from Huainanzi.)
