As defined in the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen): to wash.
Book of Odes (Shijing): One may wash the sacrificial vessels.
Commentary: Zhuo means to cleanse.
Ceremonial Rites (Yili): Reporting back that the washing utensils have been prepared.
Commentary: Zhuo means to irrigate or rinse.
Also, cleansing the heart is called purifying (sa zhuo).
