Si Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Fire (huo) 炷 Kangxi Strokes: 9 Page 669, Entry 06 Pronounced zhu (falling tone). In Jade Chapter (Yupian): The wick of a lamp. In Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): Where the flame and wick meet. In Songs of Reading Tunes (Duquge): Lighting a lamp without lowering the wick, how can there be light if there is oil? Also pronounced zhu (rising tone). Meaning is the same. In Collected Rhymes (Jiyun): Originally written as the character for master (zhu). According to the Explaining Graphs (Shuowen), the entry for the character master states: the flame master inside a lamp. Xu Xuan says: Today, common usage distinguishes it by writing it as wick (zhu), which is incorrect. However, the distinction between wick and master has been followed for a long time. Now, both follow the fire radical.
