Ancient form. Tang Rhymes (Tangyun): Pronounced zhen. Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhymes Compendium (Yunhui): Pronounced zhen.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it means to inquire through divination. It is composed of the radical for divination and the radical for shell, the latter serving as a gift.
Xu states: The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) mentions the great zhen rite, which refers to divining about human affairs.
Also in the Book of Changes (Yijing), Hexagram Qian: Original, penetrating, advantageous, and zhen. The Commentary (Shu) says: Zhen means correct.
Also, in the Commentary on the Words (Wenyán): Zhen is the trunk of affairs.
In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), Chapter Taijia: If the one man is truly good, the myriad states will be zhen. The Commentary (Shu) says: If the Son of Heaven possesses great goodness, then the world attains its correctness.
Also, in the Book of Documents (Shangshu), Chapter Great Plan (Hongfan): It says zhen, it says hui. The Commentary (Zhuan) says: The inner trigram is called zhen, the outer trigram is called hui.
Also, in the Book of Rites (Liji), Chapter Tan Gong: Thus, the Master was called Zhenhui Wenzǐ. The Commentary (Shu) says: According to the methods of bestowing posthumous titles, to be consistent in one's inner and outer conduct is called zhen.
Also, in the Explaining Names (Shiming): Zhen means settled. It means to be refined, settled, and unmoved by confusion.
Also, the name of a tree. In the Materia Medica (Bencao): Nüzhen is a tree name. Su Song says: Nüzhen bears frost and remains lush green, therefore a chaste woman (zhēn nǚ) admires its name. Another name is winter green.
