Pronounced ze.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the slats of a bed.
According to the Er Ya (Erya), it is called a lattice. The commentary states it refers to bed boards.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), it is written: Is it a bamboo mat for a grand official, ornate and smooth?
It also means to accumulate.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: Green bamboo as if accumulated. The commentary states: To accumulate, referring to lush growth as if stacked together.
It also refers to a reed mat.
In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), it is written: Then they rolled him in a reed mat and placed him in the latrine. The Explanation of Obscurities (Suoyin) notes: This refers to a thin mat of reeds.
Also pronounced zhai. A tool for pressing wine. Same as the character for a wine press.
