Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states: A parrot is a bird that can speak.
History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Annals of Emperor Wu: Southern Yue presented a bird that could speak.
Shigu Commentary: Parrots today are found in Longxi and Nanhai. One kind is white, one is green, and one has five colors. The white and five-colored ones are particularly intelligent and understanding. Shiguan called them gangao, and Li Fang called them longke.
Also known as cangying.
Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), 17th Year of Duke Zhao, Du Yu Commentary: The azure bird is the cangying. It sings at the beginning of spring and stops at the beginning of summer.
Also refers to the nautilus.
Records of Strange Things in the Southern Region (Nanzhou Yiwu Zhi): The parrot nautilus is shaped like an inverted cup, with a head resembling a crow’s head, facing toward its belly, looking like a parrot.
