It has various names including canggeng, shangcang, lihuang, liliao, licang, chuque, huangpao, boshu, huangniao, and golden-robed prince. Emperor Wen of Wei and Wang Can both authored the Rhapsody on the Oriole. It also refers to the patterns on bird feathers. From the Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes of the Kingdom section: The mulberry-birds are singing, with beautiful patterns on their feathers. Commentary by Mao: Ying implies having patterns. The common variant form ying is incorrect.
