According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), ying is a bird, specifically the yellow oriole. It is also known as canggeng, shangcang, lihuang, liliu, licang, chunque, huangpao, boshu, huangniao, and jinyigongzi. Emperor Wen of Wei and Wang Can both authored Rhapsodies on the Oriole. Also refers to the patterns on bird feathers. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiaoya section, it is written: The titmouse flies back and forth, its feathers are patterned like an oriole. The Mao Commentary states: Ying refers to having a patterned appearance. The common variant form ying is incorrect.
