According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a type of jar. According to the Broad Records of Characters (Guangya), it is a bottle. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is an earthenware vessel. In the Biography of Han Xin from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is recorded: "Used wooden jars (yingfou) to cross the army and attack Anyi." The commentator Yan Shigu stated: "Yingfou refers to a vessel with a large belly and a small mouth." Additionally, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced ying (falling tone), with the same meaning. According to the Dictionary of Standard Character Forms (Ganlu Zishu), it is used interchangeably with the variant form (ying).
