According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a beautiful type of jade.
Book of Documents (Shujing): Carrying jade, beautiful stones, bamboo, and reeds. Commentary: Yao and kun are both beautiful jades. Exegesis: Wang Su states that yao and kun are beautiful stones that are close to jade.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Weifeng: They threw me a papaya, I repaid them with qiongyao (a type of beautiful jade).
History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Treatise on Rites and Music: Looking everywhere at the jade hall. Commentary: Yao is a stone that resembles jade.
