Book of Filial Piety and Glosses (Erya), Explanation of Training: Yaoyao means to be distressed with no one to tell. Commentary: It is the distress and fear of a virtuous person who has nowhere to appeal. Sub-commentary: Cites the Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wang, Shuli: My heart is shaken. Mao Commentary: Distressed with nowhere to complain. The meanings and sounds of yao and yao are identical. Another definition says it means disorder.
Also, pronounced yao. It means to palpitate, to be perverse, or to be deluded. In the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is sometimes written in a variant form (tiāo).
