Chou Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Woman (nǚ) Yao Kangxi Stroke Count: 13 Page 267, Entry 39 Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) state the pronunciation is yao. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it describes the appearance of walking with shoulders hunched. Another interpretation suggests it means to play or to be beautiful. It also refers to a mountain name. Mount Guyao is located to the east of the Terrace of the Emperor (Ditai).
