According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), Mo-Ye is the name of a divine sword from the state of Wu.
Also written in a variant form (xié). In the Biography of Jia Yi from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is written: The Mo-Ye becomes dull, while the lead knife becomes sharp. The commentary by Ying Shao states: Mo-Ye was a grand master of Wu. He crafted precious swords, which were thus named after him.
Also written in a variant form (yé). In the Discussing Military Affairs chapter of the Xunzi, it is written: The Mo-Ye has a long blade and a sharp edge. According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written in the forms (yé) and (yá). The original form of the character (yé) is written with the component (jié) and not with the component (fù).
