Guangyun: Pronounced yi. Jiyun, Yunhui, Zhengyun: Pronounced yi. Read the same as the character for barbarian (yi). The younger sister of one's mother is called an aunt (yi). Also, the younger sister of one's wife who marries into the same family is also called an aunt (yi).
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: The aunt (yi) of the Marquis of Xing.
Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Duke Zhuang, Year 10: Lady Xi Gui passed through the state of Cai, and the Marquis of Cai said, She is my aunt (yi), and kept her to meet with her.
Also, a cousin on the mother's side is called a paternal cousin-aunt (tangyi).
Records of Court and Countryside (Chaoye qianzai): When Di Renjie was serving as Prime Minister, he visited the cousin-aunt (tangyi) of Lady Lu. Renjie asked, What does my cousin desire? Lady Lu replied, As an elderly aunt, I only have one son, and I do not wish for him to serve the female emperor.
Also, the Eighteenth Aunt is the spirit of the wind.
Records of Strange Tales (Chuanyiji): On a moonlit night in a garden, Cui Yuanwei met several female companions who were all beauties of incomparable appearance. They requested that Yuanwei prepare a banner every New Year's Day, painted with the sun, moon, and five stars, to pray for the protection of the Eighteenth Aunt of the Feng family. Cui Yuanwei followed their instructions, and later, although a violent wind blew and flowers and leaves flew about, the flowers in the garden remained undisturbed.
Textual Research: Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Duke Zhuang, Year 10: Lady Xi Gui passed through the state of Cai, and the Marquis of Cai said, She is my aunt (yi), and kept her to entertain her. I have carefully corrected the original text by changing entertain her to meet with her.
