In the Comprehensive Rhymes (Guangyun), the Comprehensive Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced yao.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the term piaoyao refers to wind blowing upward. It also refers to wind moving objects.
In the Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu) by Zuo Si: It moves with the wind as it flutters and whistles.
In a poem by Meng Jiao: Within the mirror-like sea, every detail is visible; on the water and sky, one drifts along, fluttering in the wind.
Also, according to the Jiyun, it is pronounced yao, describing the height of the wind.
According to the Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihui Bu), it is also written in a variant form. It is commonly written as the character for sway (yao).
