A large chime.
Literary Expositor (Erya), Explanation of Music: A large chime is called a xiao.
Guo commentary: The xiao is shaped like a plow blade and is made of jade or stone. Sun Yan says: Xiao means lofty. Lofty means high. It refers to its high-pitched sound. Li Xun says: The sound of a large chime is clear and dry, hence it is called xiao. Xiao means dry. The Forest of Characters (Zilin) says: A jian is a farming implement. From the Jiang River region southwards, people call a plow blade a jian. This xiao is shaped like it, only larger.
