Xu Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Metal (jīn) Xiang Kangxi strokes: 25 Page 1327, Entry 01 Pronounced rang. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as xing, meaning the center of the intestines. The Collection of Characters (Zhengzitong) states that some say xing refers to the method of casting vessels. Whenever creating a mold, one first uses a rope to create a prototype. Once the mold is firm, one pulls the rope out from the opening; when the rope is exhausted, the mold remains, which resembles intestines. Also, in the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to a hooked-xiang, a type of weapon. According to the Definitions of Names (Shiming), a hooked-xiang has hooks at both ends and a xiang in the center. Sometimes it is called a mallet-xiang or a hook-pull, depending on its appropriate use. Also pronounced xiang. Also pronounced niang. The meanings are the same.
