Pronounced jie.
In the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means strong. It also means together. Xu Shen says: To be able to be the same as others is to be strong and powerful.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes: The strong and vigorous young men, serving from morning until night. Commentary: The appearance of being strong and robust.
Also pronounced ji.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: The elder brother says, alas, my younger brother is away on service; from early morning until late at night, he must be together with others. Rhymes with si. Si is pronounced xi. Commentary: Must be together, meaning with his peers, acting and resting in unison, unable to do as he pleases.
