According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu), the Huai River flows north through the mountain gorge, which is called Gorge Stone. According to the Extensive Dictionary of Sounds and Meanings (Guangyun), there is a Gorge Stone County, which is also a name for a prefecture. During the Qin dynasty, the general Bai Qi attacked the state of Chu and burned Yiling, which is this location. During the Later Zhou dynasty, it was situated at the mouth of the Three Gorges, and thus it was called Gorge Prefecture.
