Pronounced jiao. In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to understand or to be clear.
Also, pronounced jiao. In the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it means wise or sagacious.
Also, pronounced jiao. In the Jade Chapter (Yupian), it means clever or cunning.
Also, pronounced xiao. In the Regional Dialects (Fangyan) by Yangzi, it means happy or satisfied. In the Mencius (Mengzi), it is written: Is there no satisfaction in the human heart? Zhu Xi's commentary states: It means satisfaction or happiness.
Also, pronounced jiao. The meaning is the same as the rising tone above. It is sometimes written in a variant form using the component meaning line (yáo).
