Pronounced xiao. The appearance of grass. Also pronounced xiao. Crops damaged due to excessive fertilizer. Also pronounced hao, as recorded in the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui). The appearance of suddenly swelling.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Winter Officials (Dongguan), Wheelwright (Lunren): Use fire to heat the shaded side of the wood to make it consistent with the sunny side, then the wheel hub will not deform or bulge even when old.
Zheng commentary: The term xiao-bao refers to the fact that the shaded side of the wood is soft, and it will inevitably bend and deform later, causing the leather covering it to bulge suddenly.
Also, per the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced hao. Wood that has withered and deformed. One source states it describes grass that has grown lush and strong.
