According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a vessel for collecting money. In ancient times, it was made of earthenware, while nowadays it is made of bamboo.
Also, pronounced du. The meaning is the same.
Also, pronounced hòu. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is a bamboo cylinder shaped like a jar, capable of holding documents and bamboo slips, used for conveying confidential matters. In the Biography of Zhao Guanghan from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it mentions teaching officials to use the storage tube. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: It is like the storage jars used for money today, equipped with a small hole, allowing items to be inserted but not removed.
