Page 833, Entry 16
According to Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), pronounced xia. According to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Meetings (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced xia, with the same sound as xia.
Explained in Discussing Writing and Explaining Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as a whetstone. The Spring and Autumn Annals Traditions (Chunqiu Zhuan) record that in the State of Zheng, there was a man named Gongsun Xia, whose courtesy name was Zishi.
Additionally, the Jade Chapters (Yupian) records: xia, describing an uneven or bumpy appearance. Regarding the character jia in the dictionary section of Discussing Writing and Explaining Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as to borrow, pronounced ya, which is completely different from the character duan under the Weapon radical. The annotation for this character under the Stone radical is: a whetstone; the character is formed with the Stone radical, and jia acts as the phonetic component. Therefore, the phonetic provided by Sun Mian as xia is not incorrect. The Rectification of Characters (Zhengzitong) dismisses this character as a corrupted form of the character duan, but the basis for this assertion is unknown.
