The Analects (Lunyu) states: If one is cautious without the rites, it leads to timidity. The Great Record of Ritual (Da Dai Liji), in the chapter on Zengzi establishing affairs: When people speak of goodness, yet one displays a timid expression, it is close to not being pleased by their words. The Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) notes it is also written in a variant form.
