The Tang Dynasty Dictionary of Sounds (Tangyun) records that it is the xiangsi tree. The Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu) by Zuo Si mentions the nanmu and the liu wood, as well as the xiangsi tree. Li Shan’s commentary states that the xiangsi is a type of large tree. Its wood grain is hard and twisted; when carved, it reveals patterns that can be used to craft implements. Its fruit resembles coral and does not decay for many years. This tree is found in the Dongye region.
Furthermore, the In Search of the Supernatural (Soushen Ji) records the wenzimu tree, which grew atop the two graves of Han Ping and his wife. The roots were intertwined below, and the branches were entangled above; it was known as the xiangsi tree.
