Shuowen Jiezi states it means bad, or deep red, and also refers to thin silk. Jade Chapters (Yupian) states it means to pass through, or to catch with a net. Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) states it means to bind. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biographies of Money-makers (Huozhi Zhuan) states: In the east, it binds the Hui and Mo tribes, Joseon, and Zhenfan for the sake of profit. The commentary states: Wan means to control the key thoroughfares. Also, Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) states it is pronounced wan. It means to hook or tie. Also written in a variant form (huan).
