You Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Bean (dòu) Kangxi Strokes: 15 Page 1192, Entry 16 Pronounced wan. Also written as the same character. Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu): Li Shizhen states: The pea seed originated in the Western Regions of the Hu territory. Its sprouts are tender and curved, which is why it received the name wan (meaning to curve). It is the first among the various grains to ripen; when young, it is green, and when old, it develops spots and pockmarks. Therefore, it has various names such as Hu bean (foreign bean), Rong bean (barbarian pulse), green spotted bean, and hemp-like cluster. The History of the Liao (Liaozhi) refers to it as Huihu bean (Uighur bean). Country folk call the pea Huai bean. There is also the wild pea, which has small grains and is named qiaoyao. Supplement to the Dictionary (Zihuibu): Also written as the variant form.
